02 Jun Long Island Disabled Community Connections

This months “Interview of the Month” goes out to The Long Island Disabled Community Connections. The Long Island Community Connections is a non profit organization located in Long Island New York. They help to connect, empower and educate individuals with disabilities and their loved ones. They are a grassroots organization born out of “need”. “We realized there are a lot of helping organizations and programs that go unnoticed and we are establishing new pathways to connect disABLEd people with these resources” says founder  Terri Tupper.

Patriot Mobility Inc. got together with The Long Island Disabled Community Connections to ask them a few questions about their organization and how its impacting the community. Founders Terri Tupper and Alexandra Scheck Calamia had this to say:

When was The Long Island Disabled Community Connections founded?

We originally founded Nassau/Suffolk Connections in 2013 and we added LIDCC this year in order that we may specifically help bring unity to Long Islands DisABLEd community.

What made you want to get involved in this type of organization?

It has been a personal goal for about 8 years, since I became disabled myself, to open a Non-Profit for the disabled, homeless, mentally ill & low income families so that they may be connected with resources that are here on LI to fulfill all their needs. My partner at Nassau/Suffolk Connections – “Alexandra Scheck Calamia” , my best friend from Nursing School who is now also disabled has been with me since day 1 on this Journey & oversees the “Nassau” side of everything while I take on the Suffolk side.

What are your goals for you and your organization in the next year/two?

We hope to have our website up and running by July 1st and have phone lines hooked in by the end of the Summer & by 2017 we hope to attain “Non-Profit” status. Our goal is to connect people with programs, projects, services & businesses that will HELP them have all they need to enjoy life on Long Island & be as productive as they wish to be.

How long have you lived in your current town?

I have lived here since May of 2013 but have been a Suffolk County resident since 2007 & prior to that I lived & grew up in Nassau County. My partner grew up in Nassau County & currently resides within the Town of Hempstead.

What are some of your favorite pastime activities?

Terri:

I love to volunteer in the Community, raising funds & writing grants for different organizations that I support heart & soul. I love writing short stories & poems. I am currently working on a book right now. I love teaching my children about nature & taking them places they will never forget.

Alexandra:

Volunteering for worthy causes, Kayaking, Hiking, Crabbing, Fishing, Camping, Board Games, Reading & Internet Research, spending time with family.

In the next couple of months The Long Island Disabled Community Connections plans on becoming the number one resource for disabled and handicap news. They focus on providing tools and resources to those with disabilities and their loved ones helping them to find answers, products an much more.
